The Gucci Marmont Handbag

Today, I want to talk about one of the most memorable purchases in my handbag collection — my Gucci Marmont handbag. It’s wild to think this design was released around five years ago, because at the time, it was everywhere. My Instagram feed was filled with that iconic GG clasp and chevron quilting. As much as I loved it, I didn’t immediately rush to buy one.

I’ve always been cautious with so-called “it bags.” Trends come and go quickly, and I never want to invest in something that feels overexposed one season and outdated the next. So, I waited. After about a year, when the Marmont had proved its staying power, I finally decided to take the plunge. I went to Selfridges in Manchester, and after what can only be described as a long internal debate, I walked out with one of my favourite purchases to date.

Why I Wanted This Bag

At the time, I realised that despite my love of handbags, I didn’t actually own a high-quality black evening bag. Something versatile enough to work for dinner, drinks, and events — the kind of bag that instantly elevates an outfit.

My biggest decision came down to material: leather or velvet. The leather version was undeniably classic, but to me, it felt a little too shiny. The black velvet option, on the other hand, had a soft, understated luxury that felt perfect for winter. Maybe it was the time of year influencing me, but I fell in love with how plush and tactile it felt. The velvet Gucci Marmont still has that iconic double-G hardware and chain strap, but the fabric mutes the logo just enough to keep it chic rather than flashy — something I always appreciated.

The Size and Practicality

I opted for the largest version of the bag. Normally, I’m more of a small-handbag person, but when you’re spending that much on a designer item, you want practicality as well as beauty. The larger size comfortably fits my iPhone, makeup bag, keys, and even my full-sized Mulberry wallet without any space compromises.

For me, that made it feel like a true investment piece. I’ve used it for everything from nights out to travel days, and it’s held up beautifully. The larger size might not be for everyone, but in my opinion, it’s one of the most functional designer bags I own — and that’s saying something.

Do I Still Love It?

Five years later, I still think the Gucci Marmont is a genuinely lovely bag. It represents a period in my personal style evolution — one where I started taking fashion less as a passing interest and more as a passion.

Do I use it as often now? Honestly, no. These days, if I’m reaching for a black bag, I tend to gravitate toward my Dior Saddle, Chanel Double Flap, or Fendi Peekaboo. But that doesn’t make the Marmont any less special to me. It carries memories of events, milestones, and moments where I felt proud of what I’d achieved — including the day I bought it. For that reason, it’s more than just a handbag. It’s a marker of growth — both in style and self.

Has the Gucci Marmont Had Its Moment?

I think it’s fair to say that the Marmont’s peak hype has passed. It’s no longer the bag plastered across every influencer’s feed, but that doesn’t mean it’s irrelevant. In fact, I think that’s what makes it better. The trend-chasers have moved on, and what’s left is a beautifully made, timeless bag that quietly stands out without shouting.

Would I buy another one today? Maybe not — but I’ll always love the one I have. It’s a little piece of my fashion journey that I’ll keep, even if it spends more time on a shelf than on my shoulder. Because at the end of the day, fashion is about expression — and this bag will always remind me of the time I started truly investing in mine.
