Today, I am going to write you guys a post on our home security. The reason why I am writing this post is that this keeps me up at night. My worse fear is knowing that a Stanger has been in my house, going through my things. Not to mention that my worse fear is that they would take my lovely Golden Retriever Martha. Just after we got the keys to our home in 2019, two of our neighbours were robbed. They were targeted and were broken into during an evening away. That meant that the robbers had been watching the houses and waiting for people to go away. The chances were that our house was on their potential list. This made me want to step things up from our generic house alarm. So, this is what I do to keep my house safe!
Cameras at the front and rear.
The first thing that we did following the break ins around us was getting camera fit. We had them literally around the entire parameter of the house for entire protection. I did so much reading and it all said that just the presence of cameras deters up to 90% of robberies. If they have an option between a house that has cameras and no obvious protection, they are going to go with the latter. We have caught a lot on our cameras, including the time the man across the street left his hand break off and his car ran into the front of our house!

Internal alarm for doors and windows.
Naturally, we have an internal alarm system. There was one already fitted when we moved into the house, but we upgraded. We got the latest kind of system that can completely sync to our phones meaning that we can monitor our house at all times. We have control over all internal sensors, meaning that we can open up certain areas if we know that people are going to be in. It does make me feel like we are kind of living in a house ran by MI5, but it is so worth it for the additional peace of mind. I did not love the price tag though.

Sensors on lower floor windows.
Our house has amazing light, however that means that there is a shit load of windows. So many areas of our house are easily visible to people outside. Literally anybody could put their face up to our window and see what we own. We also have vertical opening windows, which are pretty easy to climb in if I do say so myself. For this reason, I have sensors on them all. If they go off, I can sound the alarm. It helps so much and really does put my mind at ease when I am out of the house.

Motion sensors on every possible entrance and garden.
We are quite lucky that we have great access to our property from all angles. That been said, it also gives unwelcome people easy access to our home. We have a detached home, which means that we don’t get the protection from adjoining neighbours. To help with this, we got some motion sensors. Now these were super pricey. They are clever enough to detect natural movement like animals and trees. Worth their weight in gold. Whenever one of these goes off, I can set the light off on our alarm and it makes people know that I can see them!
Â
Ring doorbell.
I saw so much about these when we first became homeowners. I wanted to try it out, but I also thought it may be a fad. Fast forward a couple of years and I now love this thing. It records and backs up, which is a godsend. Especially when it came to a neighbour of ours trying to steal our post. Yes, it sounds like we live in a crazy neighbourhood, but in that instance it was an old man from a couple doors up with dementia. It helps me so much and I love been able to answer the door and give directions when I am away from home.
I hope that you guys liked reading this blog post. As I mentioned, home security is something that is super important to me. My home literally is my castle and I will do everything to keep it as tight as a fortress. I know that all of the entrances are covered and I can see everything going on outside at all times. It gives me peace of mind and that is hard to come by when you have OCD like I do. This has taken away so much of the anxiety that I felt in the first few months of owning our home. I would love to hear from you guys. What do you do to keep your home safe? Do you think that you should be doing a little more?
