I have shared numerous times here on my blog, just how important my home is to me. The stability of owning my own home is something that I absolutely adore. I think it comes from moving around quite a lot as a child. I was brought up by a single mother of two daughters. She thought that moving was a good way to escape her money woes.

Obviously, we all know that is not the case. As soon as I got serious with my now husband, I expressed that I wanted to get on the property ladder as soon as possible and he was onboard. Roll on two years later and we got the keys to our amazing home. When we got the keys, it was a blank canvas. Here are some of the things that made our house a home.

Adding in character.

I have mentioned before that our home is a large new build. As with most new build houses these days, they are pretty featureless. My dream is to own an old, period cottage, but until we get there, we had to add character into this home. We added chimney breasts, panelling, new flooring, coving, etc. Anything that adds some dimension and character to a property, you can bet your bottom dollar that we did it. It was a long road for me to get to a point where I was happy with the space, but we got there in the end and I adore it.

Buying small décor touches.

Once we bought all of our larger furniture, I wanted to dress the spaces. That meant that I spend far too much money on books, candles, orniments, plants, etc. These simple things are the kind of items that for me, help fill a space and make a house a home. These are the ‘nice’ things to own, but certainly not a necessity. Growing up, my mum could have never spent £50 on a candle or £70 on a coffee table book. To be honest, when I first started spending that cash, I winced a little in pain. But seeing them items through my home, I now appreciate what a difference it makes.

Upgrading the security.

I am a worrier by nature. If there is something to think about, you can guarantee that it is whirling around my mind. That is my wonderful combination of having anxiety and OCD. One thing that we instantly did and it really helped make our house a home was upgrade the security. I want to look after the things that I love, so we heavily invested. We have camera, flood lights, alarms, sensors, etc. If you can buy it, we have it. It gives me peace of mind when I head out to work in a morning and I can monitor everything from my phone.

Adding different textures and fabrics.

Now that we are settled in the home, I am slowing adding some different textures and fabrics. The difference to the space has been enormous. Such as, I am introducing fur throws, jute rugs, etc. These simple things really diversify a space and give it more personality. I have found that since doing this, I have had so many more compliments from people about the space. It just gives each room something subtle that provides more dimensions. The only thing that I have found is that rugs, cushions and throws are so bloody expensive!

Hanging pictures and mirrors.

Something that most rented houses do not allow is hanging pictures. For so many years I lived with blank walls, and it is not what I wanted. I love to have pictures around me at all times. Whether it is personal pictures or just prints, I love to have my walls adorned. In my home, I don’t think that there is even a small area of blank space. It makes the world of difference to how cosy your space feels. Plus, with different things hanging on your walls, you can create different zones and atmospheres. I am a sucker for a good gallery wall.

I hope that you guys enjoyed reading this post all about our abode. As I mentioned above and numerous times before, I love my home. Having my own property means the world to be and it really does make me feel stable. I know that to some people in this day and age it makes them feel tied down, but for me it gives me a base. Whatever happens in the world, I can go back to my little area that nobody can take away from me. I would love to hear from you guys on this. How do you feel about owning a home these days? Is it something that you long for? Or do you prefer the free-spiritedness of renting?
