I have made no secret here on my site that the house where my husband and I currently live is not going to be our forever home. We will forever be grateful that our current amazing home, was the house that put us on the properly ladder. However, our lives and circumstances have changed exponentially since we first got the keys, and we are in the process of looking for something new.
One thing that my husband and I are in agreement about is that our next home is our forever property and because of that we have a list of a few things that we (I) really want our next home to feature.
Stone floors.
You will realise throughout this post that I am a sucker for old school things. Plus, I don’t like things to look too perfect. Because of that, I want a house with classic features and one of those things is without a doubt stone floor. The more beat up, the better. I think my favourite has to be the vastly impractical tumbled limestone because it looks so beautiful and is the kind of flooring that could definitely stand the test of time.
Â
Original beams.
Ever since I was a little girl, I have always been a sucker for a house with beams. For me, I want a house with character and the first thing that I always look for is original features like beams. It is my dream to wake up one day in a bedroom with double height ceilings and beams throughout. I know that upkeep can be hard and it can limit what you are able to do with décor, but it has been a dream of mine for probably 20 years.
Â
Sash windows.
Back when we bought our first home, I certainly didn’t think about what kind of windows were in the property. But now that is where my mind goes. I want a property with age as I mentioned above and as part of that I would adore classic sash windows. I think that there is something so beautifully quaint about how they look. Plus, they are fantastic on warmer days when you want to get more air into your space. You can also get them double glazed now which I imagine is a game changer.
Â
Original stairs.
I don’t know what it is, but original staircases do something to me. Many years ago, my aunt bought a house out in the country and one of the first things that she wanted to do was tear down and replace the original oak staircase that had been there for over 100 years. I protested and stamped my foot until she listened. For me, a grand staircase is something that is so incredibly chic and I want that kind of age and drama in a property of my own.
Â
Privacy.
I don’t want to sound like I hate our current home because that is far from the truth. However, one thing that new build properties sacrifice in order to cram in more houses is any form of privacy. Especially in our garden. When you stand in our garden, I am pretty sure that there are around 30 windows that overlook us. My next house, I want an old school detached property that has a lovely big garden and a level of anonymity, especially in the outdoor spaces.
Â
High ceilings.
This is another one of those features that seems to be synonymous with older properties. Even the fancier new builds that we have been to visit lately, all have rather low ceilings that in turn, make the entire space feel small. I want a property with height and grand ceilings. Or at least I want some height in specific rooms such as lounges and shared spaces that can often feel rather enclosed. My husband tried to talk me out of this because he was thinking about what happens if there’s a spider 20ft up that he needs to catch. But we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it!
Â
AGA.
When I was younger, I can remember visiting my grandparents house and on cold winters day, I could sit next to their AGA and read a book or play on my Gameboy. Since then, I became obsessed with AGAs, and I have always wanted one in my own house. Our kitchen now is far too small to have a full-size range, so I either want a house with one already situated, or I want a kitchen big enough to buy one new. I know that some people think they are a pain, but it has been a dream of mine of years, and I simply feel like I need one.
As always, I hope you guys enjoyed this post and learning more about the things that we want our next property to include. When we were in the process of buying our current home, I documented the whole journey, and it wasn’t without its twists and turns. I am sure that buying our next property will not be any easier, but we are ready for the challenge after a long home hunting process.
Please leave me any comments that you may have below, and I will be sure to get back to each and every one of you!
