We are just a few weeks out from meeting our baby and the nursery is finally complete. I feel like this room has been a labour of love for such a long time. When we got the keys to our house 5 years ago, we knew that this spare bedroom would one day turn into our baby’s bedroom.
However, with our fertility issues, the room became a dumping ground and a true ‘spare room’. Since we found out that I was pregnant, we slowly began to renovate the room and make it a serene room for our baby. In this post I am going to share with you our nursery and the changes that we made.
The inspiration for the nursery.
Obviously, the place that we turned to see amazing gender-neutral nurseries was Pinterest. Because we did want something that was incredibly gender neutral, I knew that I wanted the base colour of the room to be white. But to add dimension and interest to the room, we went for black accents and natural weave tones. I wanted something where the base of the room could be versatile and simple enough to carry through the different early stages of the child’s life.

The main changes that we made.
When it came to the room, we wanted to go with something simple. We started out by removing the carpet and laying down a stunning herringbone wooden flooring. On the walls we added simple wall panelling and we painted everything a clean white colour. Next up, we added a ceiling rose and a beautiful light fitting. Finally in terms of the window dressing, we added stunning wooden slat blinds and a thick pair of natural weave blackout blind curtains.

The furniture that we added.
When it came to the furniture that we added to the room, I was pretty underwhelmed when it came to nursery sets that I was setting online. So, instead we decided to try and find special items that were affordable but truly beautiful. We bought a beautiful vintage cot which the baby will be moved into when they are older. Then we have added a day bed, a wardrobe system, a rocking chair and a chest of drawers which features a changing table.

Where things are stored.
In our nursery, we have a few different storage solutions. The main thing that we have installed is an Ikea PAX system. I wanted to have a storage solution that is functional, not only now whilst the baby is at the new-born stage, but that will continue throughout the early years of the little one’s life. Inside the PAX there are shelves, racks and rails. We then have a chest of drawers where all items such as nappies, medications, sleepsuits and more are stored.

How functional the space is.
Obviously, I wanted the space to be pretty and aesthetic, but I also wanted it to be functional. Which is why many of the choices that I mentioned above were done. Including the rocking chair for comfortable feeds in the night. We have a day bed so that one of my husband and I can stay in the nursery so that at least one of us gets a good night sleep. I feel like this room has been properly configured to make me feel better and more comfortable in the space.
As always, I hope you guys enjoyed this blog post and learning about the changes that we made to our nursery. Now that this room has come together, I am adoring the space. So often I will find myself relaxing in there with a cup of tea. It makes me so excited to think about all of the amazing times that are to come. In a few years, my baby will be a toddler and so many of their amazing milestones will have happened in our nursery. Leave me a comment below. Let me know what you think about our nursery and if there is anything you would change.
