Many times here on this site I have shared that I very much fell into this career. When I first left school, I had no idea what I wanted to do. All I knew in the initial moment when I left university was that I wanted to get a job and earn enough money to go on my first girls holiday to Ibiza.

I applied for the first office job that I found and started doing basic office administration. I will be forever grateful that the Managing Director that I was working under saw something within me and put together a development plan and that is how I landed in marketing. However, as this wasn’t my plan, I have often thought what I would be doing if I didn’t fall into this career.

History teacher.

I did my degree early when I was only in comprehensive school. Because I didn’t know what path I wanted to head in, I was advised to go with a subject that I truly adored. For me, that was without a doubt history. While completing my history degree, I tried to think of what a potential career should be and the only thing I really settled on was a history teacher. I wanted to be a history teacher, like the one that I had throughout comprehensive school. She managed to get me so excited about boring subjects such as crop rotation in Russia, simply by the way she expressed herself about specific subjects. I could imagine doing that myself and it was the goal until I fell into work.

Literary editor.

If you were born in the nineties like I was, there is a strong chance that you have one or twice dreamed of being an editor. So many lead actresses in rom coms, work as a literary agent. I imagined living in a big city, working in a high-rise building, having a cubicle and working through a stack of papers on my desk. I still wonder sometimes if this could be a potential role in the future given the novels that I have written. It certainly isn’t something that I could cast aside as a dream for the future.

Ballet dancer/teacher.

Up until I was 18 years old, I was a ballet dancer. It was my main passion, and it remains to this day something that I thoroughly enjoy. When I was growing up, putting in all that effort, I figured that I would end up being a professional. My teachers certainly thought that I would be able to make it all the way. Unfortunately, when I was running and working up my stamina one day as part of a running group, the guy running parallel to me slipped into me and I snapped my ankle. Weak ankles and ballet don’t mix. My dream was over and for a long time I felt incredibly lost.

Accountant.

I have often shared that I was pretty advanced at school and one of the main areas where I flourished was in maths. If there was a definite answer to a question, such as in maths, I can always get to that answer. Because of that, I found maths incredibly easy. When having to go through different career options at school, I would often speak about accountancy because it just came naturally to me. Even now, I adore a spreadsheet and problem solving in terms of money. But I do have to be honest and say that I couldn’t imagine doing it each and every day.

As always, I hope you guys enjoyed this post and learning more about what I would be doing if this hadn’t have been my path. When I look back at my career, I am often overwhelmed with how everything fell into place. And as I said above, I will be forever grateful that I worked under the right people, at the right time.

Be sure to leave me a comment below. Let me know what you think about my career path and what I would be doing if I didn’t fall into this. It hasn’t been a smooth, nor easy path, but I am so proud of how I have got here.
