When the Makeup by Mario Surreal Skin Foundation was first released, I had to sit patiently while everybody in the US was giving it a whirl. Straight away, some people loved it, and others went overly fond. That only made me want to get my hands on it even more. Thankfully, my husband and I had a trip to New York planned, which meant one thing… shopping.
I made a list of everything that I wanted to pick up and the Makeup by Mario Surreal Skin Foundation was at the top of the list. After putting it through its paces for such a long time, it is finally time for me to share my thoughts with you guys.
Â
The coverage.
The coverage of this Makeup by Mario Surreal Skin Foundation is without a doubt medium yet buildable. The test that I always put foundation under is whether or not they cover my freckles. If I apply a foundation and nothing is visible, then I deem it a full coverage item. However, that doesn’t happen with one light layer of this foundation. With a little dry down time and a second layer, it can get very close to being a full coverage product. However, I do like to wear it as a medium coverage.
Â
The consistency.
The consistency of this Makeup by Mario Surreal Skin Foundation is incredibly light. Texture-wise I would say that this foundation closely mirrors the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. It is so light, that it barely feels like you are adding anything more than a simple lightweight moisturiser to the skin. Back in the day, I used to like thicker foundations because I could pack them on much more effectively, but that isn’t what I want these days.
Â
The shade range.
One thing that I have always loved about Makeup by Mario is that the range of shades has always been amazing. I think the brand was released after the whole Tarte outrage, but you can at least see the brand trying to be inclusive to all shades. I think that this is one of the most comprehensive launches that I have seen in terms of undertone. For the first time, I feel like I have purchased an amazing straight that is perfect straight from the bottle with no need for highlight or contour to correct.
Â
The luminosity.
When people were using this Makeup by Mario Surreal Skin Foundation and reviewing it online, the main talking point was the luminosity. Or should I say, the glitter in the product. For example, all you need to do is look closely at the bottle and it is easy to see all of the flecks of glitter or shimmer inside the product. I will say, when you apply it to the skin, you can see this luminosity through the coverage. However, you don’t look like Edward Cullen when he stepped out into the sunlight. Which is what I initially imagined I would look like.
Â
The staying power.
I have said it before and I will say it again, when I apply foundation, I need it to last all day long. Normally on a standard workday, I apply my makeup around 6am and I still need it to look good at 10pm. Obviously I powder through the day and do everything that I can in order to prolong my makeup. But the base product that I am working with needs to be high quality and with a good level of staying power. With the Makeup by Mario Surreal Skin Foundation, I know that when this is applied, set with powder and locked in with setting spray, it is going to last me all day. Plus, it is one of those foundations that looks better and better as time goes on.
Â
How it compares to other foundations.
There are very few foundations that I think are direct competitors to this Makeup by Mario Surreal Skin Foundation. The two which springs to mind are the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation and the Nars Light Reflecting Foundation. What I would say about this foundation in comparison is that the Makeup by Mario has much more luminosity. However, staying power really is pretty similar. One thing that I do love the Surreal Skin Foundation for is the amazing shade range. I don’t think that I have ever had a closer match before.
As always, I hope you guys reading this review on the Makeup by Mario Surreal Skin Foundation. This item has very quickly become one of my favourites from my collection. The way it looks is like nothing else that I’ve tried before. I think these days it is really hard to launch a foundation that differentiates from everything that is already online. I would be very happy to vouch for this Makeup by Mario Surreal Skin Foundation and say that it is worth a try. Obviously, it won’t be for everybody, but that is the case with every complexion product on the market. If you do want to give this Makeup by Mario Surreal Skin Foundation a try, I will leave a link to it below. Let me know if you have tried this, or if it is on your radar.
Great review here! You really went into detail. I had not heard about the tea on this. I will have to check it out next time I am in Sephora.

I like the sound of this, especially that it has a light texture (which I prefer). I have not heard about this brand before so it was a great introduction!
