Today I am going to sit down share some of the things that I look for in new makeup. As I am sure you are well aware, I am a makeup lover. Always have been, probably always will be. Since I was a young child, I have loved playing with makeup and creating new looks. There is something to wonderful and transformative about playing with makeup. That is why I buy it hand over fist like it is going out of fashion.

That is why I thought today I would share what I look for in makeup. This can change category by category. However, this is the broad idea that I focus on and really look for. Most of these may be common sense, but I thought that you guys would like to know!

Is the shade right?

The first thing that I need to mention is getting the shade right. I know that this is specific to base products, but it is so vitally important. If you have the wrong shade, it can be a good product completely ruined. Even though over the years I feel like I have got good at making a shade work, it still isn’t ideal. I make sure that I do everything that I can in order to get it right. If I can go into store, that is what I do. If not, I look at tutorials, swatches and everything else online. There is so much that you can get online, but nothing compares to seeing it on your skin. A tester is always the way to go because then you can see it with your other products.

What is the longevity?

When reviewing makeup, this is something that I always harp on about. I need my makeup to last all day long. Usually, I sit down to put my makeup on around 6am in a morning. It then needs to stay in place all day long until around 10pm at night. I work long ass days and I want to stay looking good throughout that time. If it a foundation, it has to stay in place and not break up. A power needs to keep me nice and matte. For mascara, I don’t want to see any flaking throughout the day. Each different makeup item has different criteria that it needs to hit for it to be longwearing. On the flipside of this, I also don’t want it to be like glue on the skin. I want my skin to still feel like it can breathe.

How will it react with my skin?

When buying products, I always consider how it is going to work with my skin. For base products, I have to take into account my skincare needs. I am quite an oily person, so I make sure that I am not going to mess up my skin. Too much oil on the surface of my skin and I am just asking for breakouts. The other thing is that with other products such as mascara and eye products, I am quite sensitive. Even though 98% of the time I am fine, but every now and again I will have a flare up. I always need to consider how a product is going to work with my skin in the long run. It is just something else that I can do to ensure I am getting my moneys worth.

What is the pigmentation/pay off like?

Something that is always incredibly important to me and that is pigmentation levels. This is something that I think about with all kinds of different products. I always opt for items that have a high amount of pay off. If I am using a foundation, I want it to be full coverage to hide all problem areas. If I am reaching for a mascara, I want it to coat my lashes with no issues. If I am paying a top price for an item, I want it to perform incredibly well. The same goes for all items including brow products, concealers, contour items, etc. There are very few makeup products that I would ever opt for where I want them to be sheer. I am a full coverage kind of girl in everything that I use and wear.

I hope that you liked reading this blog post. If you are anything like me, I am sure that these things will help you. As much as I love buying makeup, I have certainly made some mistakes over the years. It can be a money pit if you buy makeup that doesn’t work for you. Especially here in the UK where you cannot return used makeup like you can in the states.

You have to get it right first time or return it brand new to not end up out of pocket. As always, I would love to hear from you guys. Please do leave me a comment. Let me know what you think about when buying new makeup. Or do you just go with the flow and try whatever your heart desires?
