Since the moment we got the keys to our home many years ago, it has been a labour of love. Don’t get me wrong, our relatively new-build house was ready to move into, however it wasn’t our taste. The moment we got the keys, we began working hard to create a blank canvas so that we could really analyse the space that we had and work out how we wanted to move forward.

With that said, I figured that today I would sit down with you guys and share with you some of the big changes that we made to our home, why we made them and how they’ve made our home feel since.

Garage conversion.

As part of our home, we had an in-built garage. It took up a fair amount of the ground floor space. Not long after we moved in, it was obvious that we need to make something of the space. We painstakingly boarded it up, had a window fit, decorated it and now we are left with a rather charming snug area. I honestly can’t imagine living in our home without transforming this space. It has really turned our home into an incredibly functional space.

Décor throughout.

As I mentioned above, we had the big undertaking of decorating our entire house. When we first moved in, we whitewashed the walls and created a blank canvas for us to begin to build upon. Slowly and with a considered approach, I began to look at each room alongside online inspiration and map out how I wanted each room to look and feel. It was a monumental task because I was starting from scratch with no prior experience. But what we created was something truly special.

Loft conversion.

Similar to the garage, our loft was a huge, wasted space. We realised early on that we had the opportunity to add another curved staircase rather effortlessly up to the space. Plus, the previous owners of the house had previously had the loft boarded out and in the initial prep carried out to make it a useable space. This was a messy job, but in the end we got there and I am so happy with the space that we were able to create. It is a perfect relaxation zone with loads of built in space to keep the rest of the house clutter free.

Added character.

With most new builds, we were provided with big blank spaces. The walls were huge, white and with no original features. I knew that was something that I needed to change. I began to look at each space individually and think about how I could make the space more dynamic. From there, it was a lot of DIY, learning as I went and mistakes along the way. We now have a home that is packed with special features and it is truly special to be around.

New flooring.

Because of the upheaval that laying new flooring creates, we tried to put it off for as long as possible. In a house with so much furniture, it was an overwhelming task trying to navigate moving the rooms around to accommodate the flooring fitters. However, we had reached a point in decorating our home that no matter what we were doing, it wasn’t improving the appearance of the house because the flooring was tatty. It was a big undertaking, expensive as hell but completely worth it.

As always, I hope you guys enjoyed this post and learning more about some of the big changes that we made to our home. I will always be the first to say that owning a home is never straight forward. Especially if you really want to make the place your own. There is so much to do, and the cost can be exponential. However, in the end, it is bloody worth it.

I want to hear from you guys in the comments. What do you think about the changes that we made? What were some of the big impact changes you made in your own home?
